How to tie a sarong: four ways to wear yours (plus what to look for in a great one)
One piece of fabric, a surprising number of outfits
A sarong is the hardest-working item in your beach bag. It's a skirt, a dress and a cover-up, it packs smaller than a towel, and it goes from the sand to the café without a costume change.
Here's how to tie yours four ways, what to look for when you're choosing one, and how to match it to the dog who'll be supervising from the sand.
How to tie a sarong: four easy ways
Lay your sarong flat, decide how much length and coverage you want, and have a play. Every knot below is easy to adjust.
1. The wrap skirt. Fold the sarong to your preferred length, wrap it around your waist and tie the ends at the centre or to one side. Wear it over swimwear at the beach, or with a tank top or bodysuit for a sunny wander.

2. The strapless dress. Wrap the sarong around your body at bust level, bring the ends together at the front and tie a centred knot. Adjust the length until it feels right. It's an easy cover-up over swimwear for a puppuccino run.

3. The halter dress. Hold the sarong horizontally behind your back with the top edge at bust level. Cross the top corners in front of you, bring them up and tie them behind your neck. It dresses up quickly for sunset drinks or a wander through beachside shops.

4. The one-shoulder dress. Wrap the sarong around your body at bust level, bring the two top corners over one shoulder and tie them in a knot. Let the rest of the fabric drape, and adjust until it sits comfortably.
What to wear over swimwear
Not sure what to wear over swimwear? A sarong is the easiest answer. Tie it as a skirt for the beach, as a dress for lunch, or as a halter when the day turns into a night out. Add a women's bucket hat for shade and you're set from morning swim to sunset.
What to look for in a sarong
Fabric that keeps its shape
Most sarongs are made from a cotton blend. They're lovely at first, but many lose their shape or colour after a few washes.
Sandy Snoots women's sarongs are made from silky stretch lycra instead: a premium recycled swimwear fabric with Xtra Life LYCRA® fibre, with a silky-soft feel and an elegant drape. It's designed to hold its shape and colour through countless summers, and it's quick-drying and chlorine and sunscreen resistant, which matters when your sarong lives around pools, sunscreen and sea water.
A size that fits you
One size never fits all, so we make two generous sizes:
- Regular: 110cm x 135cm, fitting Australian sizes 6 to 12.
- Large: 110cm x 195cm, fitting Australian sizes 14 to 18. Same length, with a fuller wrap.
The adjustable wrap design drapes on a wide range of body shapes, so you can style it with as much or as little coverage as you like.
Sun protection and practicality
Our lycra is UPF 50+, which makes your sarong part of a sun-smart outfit. It's not a replacement for a hat, shade and sunscreen, but it's a lovely layer when the sun is at its fiercest. It's also light enough to fold down into the beach bag next to your dog's towel.
Prints you'll love
There are eight designs, from the pastel tropics of Calypso Queen and the hibiscus blooms of Aloha Allure, to the leafy greens of Tropical Paradise and the mint, blue and peach paisley of Oceanic Opulence. Pick the one that suits your mood (or your dog’s wardrobe) from our full range of signature prints.
Matching moments with your dog
No pressure. A Sandy Snoots sarong looks beautiful on its own. But if you’d like to coordinate, every sarong print comes in a matching dog rashie, and our women’s bucket hats pair with our dog bucket hats and caps too. Pick your print, then pick theirs, or take the shortcut with a sarong and rashie bundle.
It's the beach photo of the summer, and it's already half organised.

Women's sarongs: your questions
What is the best fabric for a sarong?
Look for a fabric that drapes well, dries quickly and holds its shape. Cotton blends are common but often lose their shape after washing. Our sarongs use silky stretch lycra, which is designed to keep its shape and colour.
What size sarong should I choose?
We make two generous sizes. Regular is 110cm x 135cm and fits Australian sizes 6 to 12. Large is 110cm x 195cm and fits Australian sizes 14 to 18, with the same length and a fuller wrap. The adjustable design lets you choose how much coverage you want.
Can you wear a sarong as a dress?
Yes. Tie it as a strapless dress, a halter or a one-shoulder style, and wear it over swimwear or with a simple top underneath.
Do sarongs offer sun protection?
Ours are made from UPF 50+ lycra, which adds a layer of sun protection. Combine it with a hat, shade and sunscreen and you’re covered.
Can I match my sarong to my dog's rashie?
Yes, and it’s half the fun. Every sarong print is available in a matching dog rashie, so you can be the best-coordinated duo on the sand.
Are Sandy Snoots sarongs Australian Made?
Yes. Our women's sarongs are Australian Made.
