Dog caps for sensitive eyes: A little extra shade for sunny days

For dogs with sensitive eyes, bright summer days can bring their own challenges.

We’ve seen this firsthand with Bailey. Now 14, our original Sandy Snoot has developed increasing light sensitivity over the past year, making direct sunlight uncomfortable for his eyes. On beach walks, particularly when moving between shade and full sun, he would pull back as sunlight reached his face — affecting his confidence outdoors.

Our new dog caps have made a noticeable difference. With a structured, extended brim providing shade over his eyes, Bailey can once again look ahead comfortably and enjoy his favourite beach walks. 

Why older dogs can become sensitive to light

Just like our own eyes, dogs' eyes can change with age. One common age-related change is iris atrophy, where the muscles responsible for controlling the pupil become weaker. When the pupil is unable to constrict as effectively in bright conditions, more light can enter the eye, which may make some senior dogs increasingly sensitive to sunlight.

Cataracts also become more common as dogs age, affecting vision and changing the way some dogs experience bright light.

Light sensitivity can also have other causes, so any new squinting, eye discomfort or reluctance to face bright light should always be discussed with your vet.

For Bailey, extra shade has become an important part of keeping his outdoor adventures comfortable.

A longer brim for more shade

The structured brim of our new dog caps was carefully considered from the beginning — not only in shape, but in length.

Extending slightly further forward than many dog caps on the market, the curved brim creates additional shade over the eyes and delicate facial skin. It's a subtle difference in proportion, but one that can make a meaningful difference when walking in bright conditions.
